What Is Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD)?
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) – also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by problems with sustaining attention and hyperactive behaviour. In childhood, these often cause significant challenges in school and also interfere with social development and peer interactions. It remains one of the most misunderstood and incorrectly treated illnesses today.
Common Symptoms of ADD/ADHD
- Short attention span for everyday tasks
- Easy distractibility
- Procrastination
- Disorganisation
- Problems with follow-through
- Poor impulse control (e.g. speak before thinking)
Causes of ADHD:
- Family history of ADHD
- Low birth weight
- Maternal smoking/alcohol or drug use during pregnancy
- Neonatal jaundice, brain infections, head injury
- Excessive screen time
- Processed foods, artificial colouring, and synthetic preservatives
Conditions associated with untreated ADHD:
- Anxiety
